Apple unveiled its first foldable iPhone Duo at the September 9, 2026 event, bringing a 7.6-inch display, A20 Pro chip, dual batteries, Touch ID and foldable-focused iOS 27 features.
Apple’s September 9, 2026 event marked a major change for the lineup as the company finally entered the first foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo. Unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, the new model combines a 5.4-inch outer display with a 7.6-inch inner screen in a passport-style design. The Foldable phone also brings the A20 Pro chip, dual-battery architecture, a new hinge, Touch ID, Apple Pencil support and a redesigned iOS 27 experience built around multitasking.
The iPhone Duo opens into a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display, giving it a tablet-like canvas without requiring users to carry a separate device. When folded, the 5.4-inch outer display keeps the phone experience familiar for calls, messages and quick tasks.
Unlike a traditional flip phone, the iPhone Duo folds like a small book. Apple has used Grade 5 titanium for the frame and developed a new hinge system to keep the two halves aligned while maintaining the phone's slim profile.
When unfolded, the Duo measures just 5.2mm thick, while its folded thickness is around 11.3mm. That makes the design particularly interesting because Apple is trying to balance a large screen with something that still feels like an iPhone.
Foldable displays have always come with one obvious compromise: the crease. Apple is taking a different approach with the Duo's inner screen, combining its display technology with a nano-texture finish designed to reduce reflections and make the fold less distracting during everyday use.
That could matter more in real-world use than another incremental camera upgrade.
The bigger screen would be less useful if iOS simply stretched existing apps across it. Apple has therefore redesigned iOS 27 around the Duo, allowing users to make better use of the additional display area.

Apple has equipped the iPhone Duo with its A20 Pro chip, but the interesting part is what sits alongside it. A custom vapor-chamber cooling system helps move heat away from the processor during demanding workloads.
That should be useful for people who intend to use the larger display for gaming, video editing, AI features or extended multitasking rather than simply browsing social media.
Battery design is particularly difficult in a foldable because the internal space is divided between two sections. Apple's answer is a dual-battery architecture, with battery capacity distributed across both sides of the device.
Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display. The Duo also supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging, while fast charging can take the battery to 50% in around 20 minutes.
The iPhone Duo gets a dual 48MP rear camera system, but its more interesting camera features come from the foldable design itself.
With the phone partially opened, users can position it without holding it continuously. The outer screen can also act as a preview for people standing in front of the camera, making group photos and selfies with the rear cameras more convenient.
Perhaps the biggest surprise for existing iPhone users is that Apple has dropped Face ID for the Duo. Instead, biometric authentication comes through Touch ID built into the side button.
Apple has also used an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen. This allows the large folding panel to remain cleaner, without the conventional camera cutout seen on many smartphones.
The Duo isn't being positioned purely as a bigger iPhone. Apple Pencil support gives the 7.6-inch display another purpose, allowing users to take notes, sketch ideas and annotate documents.
Support for Apple Pencil arrives later this year, but its inclusion shows where Apple sees the foldable fitting into its ecosystem somewhere between a smartphone and a compact tablet.
This is ultimately what makes this Duo foldable different from a regular Phone. Closed, it behaves like a conventional smartphone. Opened, it gives you a larger workspace. Partially folded, it can support hands-free viewing and photography.
That flexibility, combined with iOS 27's new multitasking features, is arguably the biggest reason this first foldable feels like more than just an iPhone with a folding screen.
Apple has launched its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, in India at a starting price of Rs 2,99,900 for the 256GB variant. It is also available with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options, with the top end model priced at Rs 4,49,900. Pre orders begin October 16, while sales start October 23.
